PREMIERING SOON...
THE WALKER LELA FOUNDATION announces the launch of the POSITIVE FILM SERIES to induce positive messages through media, and will be producing a 25-minute docudrama, titled “Positive + Still Here: The Male Perspective” in April 2019. This docudrama tells the story of a young man who suffers immensely from seclusion as a result of long-term depression caused by discrimination, due to his positive HIV status. The film will be directed by Michael Rochford, who is most known for his work on Pendulum(2017).
The Walker Lela Foundation is a registered, non-profit organisation based in Trinidad & Tobago. In 2010, we launched the "Positive Film Series" with ‘Positive and Pregnant’; award-winning infotainment, an educational docudrama which explored the dilemma of mother to child transmission of HIV, sexual health and reproductive health issues. It also highlighted the reality of social stigma and discrimination of persons affected, and how they sought out prevention before treatment towards ending mother/parent to child transmission of HIV.
‘Positive and Pregnant’ (2010) featured Lorna Henry; an HIV activist, who is now deceased. The film became a globally-recognised, award-winning production at several regional and international film festivals. It was screened at global health exposition Women Deliver, held in Malaysia (2014) and many more film festivals. It also received the title of "Best Social Awareness Film" at the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival in 2012. It was an official selection for the New York and Los Angeles International Film Festival and Zanzibar Film Festival in Tanzania, Africa. The content was well-received at subsequent screenings and recognized by thousands of live viewers throughout local and global communities. The crew continues to do work to sensitive audiences about the subject matter. See positiveandpregnant.weebly.com for more facts about part one of the Positive Film Series.
The executive producers of the Positive and Pregnant (2010) Ms Janie Parris and Dr Nyla Lyon's later nominated the film’s creator-Candice Lela Rolingson for a scholarship. She was sent on an assignment to research Global Public Health through the United States Tour with International Visitor Leadership Program (2012). Moreover, with the skills she attained, Lela Rolingson went on to launch a longitudinal study, later published through a course in Social Work at the University of the West Indies.
Inspired by the feedback, the producers were motivated to make a lasting impact. Now, the eager crew is ready to create ‘Positive + Still Here: The Male Perspective’, part two of the Positive Film Series. The new 2019 cast lineup features many talented actors, including Penelope Spencer, Mark Nottingham, Anand Lankaran, Renaldo “Red” Fredrick, Saul K. Ramlal and Samara Lallo, with hopes to feature a celebrity guest appearance.
The Positive Film Series’ cast and crew thank their current social impact investors: the National Lotteries Control Board (NLCB), Bmobile, the National Library and Information System Authority (NALIS), as well as the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and the Arts. However, we are also calling on interest groups, sponsors and other social impact investors to complete pledges; so we can have the necessary resources in time for principal photography.
The film’s Producer-Pauline Mark and Executive Producer (Candice Lela Rolingson) are working diligently to bring the message of the film to the forefront. If you are interested in supporting this venture, feel free to contact the latter at 1-868-720-7423 or email [email protected].

OCEANStyle Magazine Reviews Positive and Pregnant
By Douglas Gordon - Ocean Style Magazine 19/5/2011, New York
Freshman Producer impresses with this gripping story of love, pregnancy and HIV.
It was clearly a proud moment for Candice Lela-Rolingson and her team as they introduced Positive and Pregnant at the New York International Film Festival earlier this month.
After the successful showing, Candice shared with me some of the challenges that she overcame to produce the film and the sacrifices that were endured to take this important story from concept to cellulite. The journey may have been tough but the result was certainly worthwhile as this 24 minute Docudrama held the attention of everyone in the theatre.
A sobering tale of a young lady who gets pregnant, the short film does a credible job of conveying the heartache to be felt as this woman is plucked from the vibrancy of a maturing but carefree life into one of someone stricken with HIV and then compounded by the reality of being pregnant.

Students learn HIV/AIDS awareness through local film
Monday, January 31 2011
Students representing various secondary schools from the Port-of-Spain area filled the AV room of the National Library, on January 20, for a special screening of the poignant HIV/AIDS awareness docudrama, "Positive and Pregnant".
The film is a powerful piece which delves into the issues surrounding parent to child transmission of the virus and the emotional, social and personal forces at play on an HIV positive, pregnant young woman and her family and friends. It is the brainchild of business woman, now filmmaker Candice Lela-Rollingson.
The film was funded primarily through the US Embassy and the hundred-plus students were greeted with a warm and motivating open address by her excellency United States Ambassador Beatrice Welters, who impressed upon them the importance of the fight against HIV/AIDS and encouraged them to strive for excellence and to have compassion for all.
Marketing Manager of the Trinidad and Tobago Film Company (TTFC), Rudolph Hanamji, spoke to the students about opportunities available for using film as a powerful vehicle for treating with issues affecting their lives. One such opportunity is the TTFC's Secondary Schools Short Film Festival (SSSFF), which provides skills training in the rudiments of filmmaking and a chance for students to transform their stories into film projects to be shared with the nation and the world at large.
As part of its mandate to increase awareness of and appreciation for the local film (audio/visual) industry, the TTFC has committed to providing support to taking Positive and Pregnant, short films from the SSSFF and other local productions into the communities, through outreach initiatives such as the popular TT Film Nights.
Even as Positive and Pregnant is being accepted to major international Film Festivals, Lela-Rollingson is expected to apply for the Production Assistance and Script Development (PASD) grant funding programme offered by Trinidad and Tobago Film Company, for help in producing a sequel to the film which will explore the male perspective of this story.
Students of the UTT Animation and the UWI BA in Film Studies programmes are also expected to apply. This proves beyond a doubt that the local film (audio/visual) industry is a growing sector which offers many revenue-generating and career opportunities for young persons and those who are young at heart. All filmmakers are reminded that the PASD call is open until today.
For more information on the PASD Programme, SSSFFF and other TTFC initiatives, visit www.trinidadandtobagofilm.com or contact the TTFC at 625-FILM (3456) or [email protected].
